One of the few remaining castle-churches of the Knights Hospitaller (the Sovereign Military Order of Malta) in Spain. After the expulsion of the Knights Templar in 1308 (and before that), SMOM secured the way and provided hospital and other services to pilgrims in Europe and Jerusalem.
